Celebrating the life and legacy of Tony Smith

Celebrating the life and legacy of Tony Smith, who had an extraordinary life, our founder and trustee, passed away peacefully on Thursday 15th May at the age of 90.

Tony’s life was one of boundless generosity, vision, and love. He didn’t just live fully, he gave fully. To know Tony was to witness someone who saw no limits in what could be done for others. He gave us purpose and he gave us inspiration.

A successful businessman with a heart rooted in service, Tony chose to dedicate his life to one community in the Chilomoni Township of Malawi. More than 25 years ago, he set out on a mission; to build 15 crosses in 15 of the world’s poorest countries by 2033. A legacy of devotion to his Catholic faith and his belief in hope for all.

His connection to Malawi began long before 2000. In the early 1980’s, Tony had a vision, to feed the children of Malawi. That vision became the seed of Mary’s Meals, founded in 2002. From humble beginnings, the charity has grown into a global movement that now feeds over 2.4 million children every school day in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Yet Tony’s story doesn’t end there. In Chilomoni today, his vision lives on through the Beehive Centre for Social Enterprise, a thriving hub of opportunity and dignity. Tony has helped create over 640 jobs and played a key role in building five schools, where 60% of places are offered to bursary students, opening doors to those who might otherwise be left behind.

His passion was simple; education, employment, and empowerment, especially for the poorest of the poor. He believed in “PSPS: Personal Sacrifice, Public Service,” and lived it daily. And through it all, he reminded us to always “make the main thing the main thing.”
Tony didn’t want recognition. He never sought applause. He simply wanted to see people thrive, and he made that possible, not just through his actions, but through his belief in others.
Those of us who were guided, mentored, and encouraged by Tony carry his light forward. His legacy is not only in the schools, jobs, and buildings, it’s in the values we live by, the work we do, and the joy we find in serving others.
There will never be another Tony Smith. He was one of a kind, a true gentleman, a humble leader, and a joyful giver.

Tony, thank you, for your love, your belief, and your vision. Through Krizevac and every life you’ve touched, we will keep building, keep dreaming, and keep flying.
Your mission continues, and we are honoured to carry it forward.
