Krizevac Project: 2025 Round-up and not quite goodbye

Well… what a year 2025 turned out to be! Not exactly the one any of us would have ordered, but here we are, still standing, still grateful, and still full of stories.

In May we faced a loss that shook us to the core. We said goodbye to our beloved Tony Smith, founder, trustee, chairman, and a friend who somehow managed to be both a hurricane of ideas and the calm in the storm. With Tony, we knew the day would come, though I think we all secretly hoped he’d just keep going forever out of sheer stubbornness. Eight days later, we lost Josie, Tony’s sister and another much loved trustee. That one was a true shock. But in a strange, beautiful way, it felt fitting that she’d nip off quickly to keep her brother company, the two of them were always a team.

As the months rolled on, 2025 didn’t hold back. Halfords, who had supported us since 2016 with thousands of donated bikes, told us that they were changing direction and focusing on UK projects instead of international ones. We understood their reasoning, even if it felt like someone had kicked the legs out from under the table. Without those bikes and with container prices soaring, we had to face a tough truth: continuing to ship containers to Malawi simply wasn’t sustainable anymore. So in September, one of the hardest decisions in our charity’s history was made, to close all UK operational facilities, and with that came the news no one wants… redundancies.

I (Zoe) have been with Krizevac for 16 years, started by volunteering in Malawi in 2009, once returning I spent the early days in the fields of Abbots Bromley, to watching this charity grow into something nobody could have imagined, it has been the privilege of my career and a huge piece of my heart. I’ve had freedom, trust, laughter, and the occasional “Zoe, please don’t lift ‘that’ on your own” conversation. I’m walking away full of gratitude… and yes, Malawi will forever have a slice of my soul. I’ll still be cheering from the sidelines (and probably still telling people off for stacking chairs incorrectly).

Then there’s Sarah, my absolute opposite in every way. She’s the calm to my chaos, the yin to my yang, the one who stops me from sending emails with “JUST GET IT DONE PLEASE” in the subject line. Nearly eight years she’s given to this charity, starting in product design for Cycle of Good and magically morphing into digital marketing wizardry and Operations Lead. We compliment each other so well, and I’m sure she’ll find a new path where her creativity and calm nature continue to make a difference.

Matuesz, our Bert (Mary Poppins jack-of-all-trades) of warehouse operatives. Truly. I made a list when we were recruiting and was told, “Zoe, you’ll never find anyone like this.” And then he walked in like, “Hold my tea.” He’s been with us for just over a year, but it feels like he’s always been part of the furniture (the sturdy, reliable kind we actually wanted to send to Malawi). No job is out of the question, and the warehouse has never looked so tidy, organised and clean! Any company that gets him next is winning, he’s such an asset.

As we close this chapter, we want to say a huge thank you to every member of our team who has poured their time, energy, and heart into this charity, including George our original UK manager, Roxy our amazing seamstress, Bhavna our Finance manager and Toby our previous warehouse guy. Your dedication has built schools, created jobs, and changed lives. We couldn’t have done any of it without you, and we’ll always carry your impact forward.

And our volunteers… honestly, where do you even begin?
Joe, our longest-serving champion (16+ years), Chris the scrap man and container magician, Stan & Alan, our unstoppable Elephant Bike duo who tried to retire but bounced back faster than a bungee cord. And the hundreds of volunteers over the years, far too many to list, but each one is a part of this mad, brilliant family.

So yes, operations may be closing, but goodness, look at what we’ve achieved.
  • 81,000 bikes donated by Halfords and donors.
  • 20,000 bikes from Royal Mail
  • £750,000 raised by our enterprises, Elephant Bike and Cycle of Good.
  • 8,000+ sewing machines thanks to our friends at WorkAid and local donors.
  • 5 schools built, with 60% bursary places, dormitories for school boarders, a University and all ongoing projects including Beehive Mills Industrial Park and Beehive Enterprise Park.
YOU all helped to do that. Every donation, every bike, every hour volunteered, every penny spent in our online shop. You’ve helped build communities, create livelihoods, and change futures.
And although this chapter closes, the Krizevac Project itself continues. We’re simply no longer accepting donations or sending containers. The heartbeat of our work in Malawi is still strong.
We leave the UK side, lovingly and a little tearfully, in the capable hands of Vince Owen our MD. From January, please direct all enquiries to info@krizevac.org
So, from all of us… thank you. From the bottom of our very tired, very full hearts.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas, a peaceful New Year, and a reminder that this isn’t a full goodbye,  just a “ta-tar for now.”
With love, laughter, and a warehouse full of memories.
