Beehive buzzes with new excitement !

Behive campusIt’s been a busy year at Beehive Centre for Social Enterprise with the launch of two major initiatives. John Paul II Leadership and IT Training Centre (JPII LITA for short) is now fully up and running, not only do Malawian students have the opportunity to learn computer skills in a top quality college environment, they will also have access to leadership training courses which will help them to become the African entrepreneurs of the future.

Children-playingIt was always our dream to help Beehive build and run a children’s centre. Not only would the centre enable parents to work and train at Beehive, knowing their children are receiving top class care, the centre will also work with the poorest and most vulnerable families in Chilomoni by offering outreach services that help parents to keep their children strong, health and safe.

Stay and play groupWell the dream is one massive step closer as in January this year we opened the “south” building of this huge innovative centre. The south building (next to JPII LITA) offers full day care for nearly 250 children, many of these are orphans or vulnerable children who receive free care thanks to generous sponsors both in Malawi and the UK. If you would like to become a sponsor please call the UK office on 0845 003 6004.

This centre relies on the success of the Beehive enterprises as profits generated through the rental of JCB’s, the selling of bikes and computer rentals to ensure its long term sustainability. But as the enterprises are flourishing, despite hard financial times in Malawi, we are convinced that this centre will help to transform the lives of generations of children

.

JPII-LITA-receptionThe “North” building is currently under construction and will be open in July 2012, this will house all of the early years health and social care services as well as the fun bits like a community café and toy library.

Lyndsey helping out at the stay and playNone of this would have been possible without a huge amount of effort from a massive amount of people. The Malawian team, headed by Peter Nkata, work so hard to manage Beehive so that it’s always buzzing, but sometimes expert skills are needed to help train the local team or offer crucial technical input.

This is where our international volunteers fit in, so our heartfelt thanks go to: Marian Pearson and David Meechan- our longest serving volunteers in Malawi who have trained 65 Care Givers to work in the centre. Not only have they delivered all the training, they wrote the course and the curriculum so that it meets and exceeds all Malawian standards. Marian and David need special thanks by also filling our volunteer vacancies by steeping in to take over all management duties until our new Children’s Centre Manager arrives in Malawi.

SarahOur volunteer Room Leaders- Sarah Battersby, (who stepped up to be Care Manager and did a fabulous job), Lyndsey Coyne, Jennie Hone and Joan Smith who all do a superb job of leading their rooms

Our architects and engineers who get the buildings built- Melvin Hurst (Head of Construction), Giacomo Zanardo (Architect), Rita Dametto (Architect), Hugh Rogers (Head of Construction), Chris Saddler (Engineer)

We’ve had such a huge amount of help from volunteers, in fact since we started asking people to help us out we’ve had support from more than 55 people, most staying in Malawi for around six months.

If you think you can help with this exciting project please see the vacancies details on our volunteering page.
